Malaga: Late Lustreware

Production of lustreware is said to have continued perhaps until the Christian ‘reconquest’ of the town in 1487, which seems to have affected the population and economy of the city profoundly.

Late production is not well documented, and examples securely dated to the 15th century are thus far elusive.

A complete bowl decorated with a boat bearing the arms of Portugal (below) has been traditionally dated to the first half of the 15th. The bowl, however,  bears part of the Portuguese shield as defined from 1385 and there are no visible means to ascribe this vessel to such a late date as the 15th century.
