Valencia Pula

Valencia: Pula – Style lustrewares

Produced between c.1320 and 1375.

This group is named from a collection of 58 vessels found in a pit in Pula (Sardinia) in 1896. The majority of the pieces were lustrewares with unique decorative motifs and, at the time of their discovery, their origin was quite unknown. Analysis of the fabrics has now confirmed their Valencian origin.

Their chronology is established by parallels with the Italian bacini and by excavations at Rougiers, where Pula-Type Lustreware is dated between 1332 and 1348.

Their defining characteristic is the radial motif: stars, pineapples, trees of life.

The main forms produced were bowls and plates.
