MUEL LUSTREWARE

Muel (Zaragoza) produced lustreware only during the 16th century and until 1610, when Moriscos (converted Muslims living in Spain), many of them potters, were deported. Muel lustreware seems to have had a more local distribution, but occasional examples have also been found in the UK and northern America.

Fabrics are fine, of light pink/orange colour and without any visible inclusions. The majority of forms produced were dishes and small bowls with lugs or horizontal handles; baptismal fonts and larger bowls/pancheons were also manufactured.

The characteristic motifs are the split flower (flor partida) and the bird, plus the use of stencil for blocks of decoration.
